Comfort in a home depends first on how the building sits on the plot, and only then on finishes.
### Which way do the windows face?
In most of India the sun is strongest from the west in the afternoon. Large unshaded west-facing windows let in heat late in the day. Where possible, keep west walls solid or well shaded and put the main openings elsewhere.
### Shade the openings
Projecting balconies, chhajjas, louvres and perforated jali panels cut direct sun while still letting air and light through. Many contemporary facades use these elements for both comfort and appearance.
### Let air cross the house
Openings on opposite or adjacent walls let air pass through a room. A window with no outlet for the air will not ventilate well. The staircase and any open-to-sky area can help draw warm air up and out.
### Choose surfaces with care
Light-coloured walls reflect more heat than dark ones. Glass is welcome for light and views but needs shading where the sun is strong.
